ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

The minimum age for a Class 1S license in the Province of Manitoba is 18 years. While it is possible to earn a Class 1S license and successfully complete the course at age 18, it is strongly recommended that students be at least 21 years of age upon graduation.

The minimum age for a tractor/trailer driver in the USA is 21 years. Since many Canadian companies operate in the USA, the above age restriction should be considered when contemplating a driving career.

Therefore, the following requirements must be fulfilled prior to enrollment:

bulletAbility to read and write fluently in English
bulletAbility to cross the USA/Canada Border legally and commercially
bulletPhysically fit and able to perform a variety of tasks (some physically demanding)
bulletA mechanical aptitude (preferred)
bulletGrade XII if under age 21
bulletAcceptable Driver Abstract regarding current industry standards
bulletValid Driver's license
bulletPass Provincial Medical Exam
bulletObtain Class 1 Learners and Air Brake Endorsement Permits
bulletA healthy positive attitude and a strong willingness to learn
bulletEnglish benchmark level of 6 in Speaking, Reading & Comprehension

Manitoba Motor Vehicle Branch will require the following:

bulletMedical Form - Have your doctor perform a physical examination and complete the medical form and return it to the Motor Vehicle Branch
bulletProfessional Drivers Manual - $10.00
bulletAir Brake Manual - $10.00
bulletInstructional Permit (Beginners Class 1 - Written) - $10.00
bulletAir Brake Permit (Written) - $10.00
bulletDriver's Abstract - $10.00

Winnipeg Police Service:

bulletCriminal Record Search - $13.00

REDTI will also interview each prospective student to determine general suitability for a career as a truck driver.

ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES

  1. Complete the application and forward it with your Driver's Abstract and deposit of $150.00 to secure a seat in the class. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND CLASS AS PLANNED AND A DEPOSIT HAS BEEN MADE, A WRITTEN REQUEST WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN 90 DAYS TO REFUND THE DEPOSIT.

  2. Tuition payable will be divided into three (3) payments and all tuition has to be paid before the road test for Class 1 license.

  3. Obtain your instructional permit (beginners license) for Class 1 at a Driver Licensing Centre.  A medical examination is required for Manitoba Motor Vehicle Branch.  Please schedule the medical prior to the course commencement. 

  4. Notify Employment Insurance Centre (if on benefits) as to your decision to enroll in the course.  If you require a confirmation letter we will have to have your application for class before issuing the confirmation letter.  We will also require from them stating what Employment Insurance Centre in funding you for.

  5. We will contact you in writing or by phone prior to the start date with any final details if necessary.

  6. Obtain a Criminal Record Search for your local law enforcement agency.  The Winnipeg Police Service provides this assistance in Winnipeg.  Bureau of Police Records is located at 151 Princess Street on the 4th floor directly across from the elevator.  The phone number is 986-6073.

  7. Obtain a Drivers Abstract from an Motor Vehicle Branch here in the city.

TRAINING SCHEDULE

The first two (2) weeks of training will consist of classroom instruction.  Classroom days are from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

The following six (6) weeks training consist of in-cab instruction.  This will be done on a rotation basis during a 24 hour period.
